Jerry Wilson began reproducing carved marine shell gorgets while serving as a volunteer at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Illinois, and later added gourd carving to his repertoire. He became interested in the natural dyeing process in order to help supply his wife, Sue, with historically correct fiber to spin into yarn for use in her fingerwoven sashes.
Susan Ream Wilson has been interested in Native American crafts as long as she can remember. She has been a fingerweaver and fingerweaving instructor for over 20 years, specializing in sashes woven of handspun yarn dyed with natural dyes. Her work has won numerous awards, including the World Sheep Festival Best of Show in two consecutive years. Besides her research into prehistoric textiles, she is known for innovations in fingerwoven items besides sashes, such as: wall hangings woven into driftwood, pouches, scarves and wall hangings with beads or rocks woven in, bookmarks, bangle bracelets, Christmas tree wall hangings and shawls. These items are produced no where else, but Susan’s studio and classes.
